The Caretaker’s Capacity
A 12-week journey through The Recipe Book of Life for people caring for someone they love.
When you become a caretaker, your days can fill with appointments, decisions, worry, and everyone else’s needs. Somewhere in the middle of it, you may begin to wonder: Where did I go?
Guided by Becky McClain, this program brings the themes of Bill Gisclair-Sullivan’s The Recipe Book of Life into the lived experience of caregiving. Each week offers a teaching, a practical reflection, and a small question to carry into daily life.
Your 12-Week Journey
Structured in three gentle 4-week movements. Tap any week to view the lesson, practice, and carried inquiry.
Part One: Notice the recipe you are living
Explore the ingredients currently shaping your days: responsibilities, relationships, expectations, and needs that may have slipped out of view.
Map a typical caregiving week and mark what nourishes or depletes you.
Consider the difference between what matters to you and what urgency demands from you. An intention can guide one moment, even when you cannot control the day.
Choose a brief intention to return to before a difficult task or conversation.
Notice how caregiving stress appears in breath, tension, fatigue, and the urge to stay constantly alert. Practice responding to a signal before you reach your limit.
Take a short, adaptable pause to notice your surroundings, your body, and what you need next.
Explore beliefs about being a good daughter, son, spouse, parent, or caretaker. Notice which beliefs support you and which leave no room for your humanity.
Write down one caregiving “should” and examine where it came from.
Part Two: Make room for your needs
Look beneath the endless list of tasks to identify needs for rest, help, clarity, connection, or time of your own. Having needs does not diminish your love.
Name one need clearly and one realistic way it might be met.
Recognize what belongs to you, what can be shared, and what is beyond your control. Explore boundaries as decisions about your time and energy.
Prepare one simple sentence for a recurring request or difficult conversation.
Make space for emotions caretakers often feel pressured to hide. Loving someone and finding the work hard can both be true.
Write two honest truths about your experience without asking either one to cancel the other.
Examine the habit of doing everything yourself. Identify support that is specific, available, and useful before you are overwhelmed.
Make one concrete request or identify one task someone else could own.
Part Three: Choose what comes next
Recognize the grief that can accompany changes in health, independence, family roles, and the future you imagined. There is no required timeline or correct feeling.
Name a change you are living with and what support would help you face it today.
Explore the parts of your identity that caregiving has crowded out, alongside the values that have stayed with you. You do not have to solve your whole future to reconnect with yourself.
Choose one small activity or connection that feels like yours.
Review the patterns you want to keep, adjust, or release. Build a practical mix of boundaries, people, pauses, and sources of nourishment for the season you are in.
Create a personal capacity recipe for an ordinary week and a particularly hard one.
Bring together what you have learned about your needs, choices, relationships, and limits. Caregiving may continue; your way of living within it can keep evolving.
Write a page to return to: what matters, what support you can call on, and what you want to remember when life gets loud.
